NBC’s hit singing competition The Voice is back for Season 28 on September 22, and it’s introducing some of the biggest format changes in years — including a bold new rule that could transform the Blind Auditions.
The new season features a familiar yet dynamic coaching panel: Michael Bublé, Niall Horan, Reba McEntire, and Snoop Dogg. While fans can still expect the show’s trademark red chair drama, NBC has added fresh elements designed to raise the stakes and give contestants more chances to shine.
The Carson Callback Card: A Game-Changer for Singers

For the first time, host Carson Daly will play an active role in the Blind Auditions with the Carson Callback Card. If no coach turns their chair for a singer, Daly can use the card to give that contestant a rare second chance at an audition. This twist could mean career-defining opportunities for hopefuls who might otherwise go home too soon.
More New Twists in Battles, Knockouts, and Playoffs
The rule changes don’t stop there. During the Battle Rounds, artists will now select their own pairings instead of being matched by coaches. In the Knockouts, coaches get access to a powerful new tool called the Mic Drop Button. Each coach can press it once, securing a special spotlight for one team member. Fans will later vote for one of these Mic Drop artists, with the winner earning the chance to perform at the iconic Rose Parade on January 1.

Meanwhile, the Playoffs will narrow the field in a new way. Instead of advancing two singers each, coaches will only choose one artist. Viewers will vote to save two additional performers, reducing each team from eight to six contestants as the competition heads into the Live Shows.
A Coaching Lineup With Chemistry

Though all four Season 28 coaches have appeared before, this marks their first time together. The mix of veteran country star Reba, crooner Michael Bublé, One Direction alum Niall Horan, and rap icon Snoop Dogg promises fresh chemistry.
In a preview clip, Horan admitted he was starstruck meeting Snoop: “I don’t think I’ve ever been so nervous in my whole life… but I’m so happy to work with him. He’s hilarious and surprisingly great at this coaching thing.”
When to Watch
