NEW YORK — Former President Donald Trump is moving aggressively to influence New York City’s high-stakes mayoral race, pressing to narrow the crowded field against Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani. But efforts to clear the path for a one-on-one showdown are meeting sharp resistance from key contenders.

Trump’s Push to Consolidate the Field

Trump and close allies have explored ways to persuade Mayor Eric Adams and Republican activist Curtis Sliwa to exit the race, according to reports. Options under discussion allegedly included positions in a future Trump administration, such as a housing role or even an ambassadorship for Adams.

Speaking ahead of a dinner with tech executives last week, Trump argued that Mamdani, a progressive state assemblyman, could secure victory in November unless rivals unite.

“I don’t think you can win unless you have one on one, because somehow he’s gotten a little bit of a lead,” Trump said. “I would like to see two people drop out and have it be one on one. I think that’s a race that could be won.”

Trump denied personally pressuring Adams, Sliwa or former Governor Andrew Cuomo to leave the race, but he made clear his opposition to Mamdani. “I don’t like to see a communist become mayor, I will tell you that,” he added.

Resistance From Adams and Sliwa

Both Adams and Sliwa swiftly rejected speculation about dropping out.

Sliwa, founder of the Guardian Angels, dismissed the idea of joining a Trump administration and said he is “committed to carrying this fight through to Election Day.” His campaign quickly announced new offices in Brooklyn.

Adams, addressing reporters outside Gracie Mansion, delivered a fiery statement. “This polo shirt that I’m wearing that says ‘Eric Adams, Mayor of the City of New York,’ I’m going to wear that for another four years,” he declared. “I’m a working-class New Yorker. They are not like us.”

Business Leaders Weigh In

Billionaire John Catsimatidis, a longtime Republican power broker, confirmed recent discussions with Trump about the mayoral race. “Anybody but Zohran,” Catsimatidis said. “New York City is the capitalist capital of the world, and we don’t want it to be communism or socialism, whatever.”

He added that Trump has a small circle of trusted advisers working on strategies to narrow the field.

Democrats Warn of Unprecedented Intervention

Former Mayor Bill de Blasio, who supports Mamdani, called Trump’s involvement in the city’s election “unprecedented.” While past presidents have backed candidates, de Blasio said he could not recall one “trying to shape the race or manipulate the dynamics of the race.”

Democratic strategist Rebecca Katz warned that Trump’s broader interventions — including deploying federal forces to Washington, D.C., and signaling a crackdown in Chicago — should be taken seriously. “We’re past the wake-up calls. It’s happening,” she said.

A Siena College survey last month put Mamdani at 44%, with Cuomo at 25%, Sliwa at 12% and Adams at 7%. Ten percent of voters remained undecided.

Mamdani, 33, has built momentum with a grassroots campaign focused on affordability and social media outreach. Having already hit the $8 million fundraising cap under the city’s matching funds program, he recently asked supporters to contribute time rather than money.

Linking Trump to Cuomo, Mamdani framed the race as a battle for New York’s democratic values. “Today we have learned what New Yorkers long suspected: Andrew Cuomo is Donald Trump’s choice to be the next mayor of this city,” he said.

The Road Ahead

Cuomo, running as an independent after losing the Democratic primary, has shifted his message from opposition to Trump toward seeking common ground. Adams and Sliwa remain defiant, refusing to bow out despite mounting pressure.

With Mamdani leading and Trump intensifying his involvement, the contest is shaping up as one of the most consequential and unpredictable mayoral races in recent New York history.
